How the Australian authorities use biometrics
For what concerns foreign nationals, the Australian authorities collect and store biometrics (usually, a face photograph and fingerprints) in secure databases following the requirements of the Migration Act and the Privacy Act. This is done in order to:
- Protect the foreigner’s identity from fraud
- Keep the Australian borders and people safe
- Ensure the security of travellers
The information gathered by immigration and diplomatic officers may be checked against the one stored by Australian and international agencies to confirm the visitor’s identity, criminal record, and/ or protection status.
Health requirements for travellers to Australia
Australia entry requirements include meeting certain health standards. These include having the necessary vaccines for Australia.
In order to meet the Australia visa requirements for health, applicants may be required to have a health examination, which will be assessed by a Medical Officer of the Commonwealth (MOC).
Those who have a significant health condition will need to sign an agreement with the Australian health authorities to monitor progress with an onshore health provider, especially if the applicant:
- Had their health examinations outside Australia.
- Is applying for a protection visa for Australia.
- Is at increased risk of developing active tuberculosis.
- Has a significant health condition such as tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis B or C, or Hansen's disease.
Depending on the type of visa, the applicant’s family members might also have to meet Australian entry requirements for health, even if they are not migrating to Australia.
Character requirements
Travellers must meet a number of character requirements to be approved for an Australian visa.
Most eligible individuals with no history of lawbreaking usually receive their online visa quickly and without incident. However, the chances of approval can be affected by having a criminal record when traveling to Australia.
